Emergency Response

As a part of our commitment to provide a safe learning and working environment, all schools in the province have emergency response procedures. Over the past several years students and staff have been using three terms to define our response to emergencies that occur in and around the school. As of the start of this school year there are some changes to our emergency response procedures.

We now have three emergency response states: "Lockdown", “Hold and Secure” and “Shelter in Place.” Students will be learning and practicing these codes this year. We'll be having a full school emergency response practice in October.

Lockdown” remains the same. Lockdown is used as a response to a major threat of violence within the school or immediate area. Students and staff learn how to best hide themselves in their locked classrooms.

Hold and Secure” will be a response to a threat in the general vicinity of the school. While the doors will be locked and monitored, the school and classes will continue to function normally. Occupants do not leave.

Shelter in Place” will be a response to an external environmental situation such as weather or a chemical spill. While the doors will be locked and monitored, the school and classes will continue to function normally. Occupants do not leave. We may allow others inside.

Please be assured that we work closely with the police during any emergency response and during "Hold and Secure" and "Shelter in Place" students are safe inside the building.
