Forces in Grades 4 & 5
Students in Ms. Carroll's Grade 4 & 5 class have been building structures in science class. Their goal was to support 1 litre of water. Students learned about live and static forces as well as tension and torsion.
We have some PECI students who are willing to offer homework help after school for students in grades 6-8. This will be offered on Mondays from 2:30 - 3:45. Students and parents who might wish take advantage of this should contact Mr. Pickard.
Genius Hour in Grade 5 & 6
Ms. Babcock's students have been spending some of their class time exploring their own interests. Each week they spend some of their learning time in "Genius Hour".
Genius Hour was modelled after the way Google allows its employees to spend up to 20% of their time pursuing topics of personal interest. Employees were more engaged and productive the rest of the week and they invented great things (like Gmail!).
The same holds true for students. Once a week, for one full hour, students learn about topics of personal interest. During this hour, students are goal-setting, researching, collaborating, and organizing data. So far this year, students have made their own chocolate (measuring, converting), learned magic tricks (counting cards, concentration and perseverance), created a movie using stop animation (3D Art, camera angles) and written a script (developing characters, using dialogue). Students are discovering sides of themselves and their friends and having so much fun, when the timer for the hour goes off, they can't believe time is up!

Students in grade 5 and 6 were making optical illusions using lines and colours on Friday. It was more difficult that they thought it would be but they had success in the end.
Orange and Black Day
Friday Oct 30 was Orange and Black day at Queen Elizabeth. Student Council organized this spirit day and students were invited to wear orange and black clothes. Several classed had 100% participation. A draw was made for first and second prize. Madame Lucas's grade 4 French Immersion class won first place and each student received a slice of pizza. Ms. Keddie's grade 2 class was second and each got an ice cream cone. Student council members visited each class to count students. Later they delivered ice cream and pizza.
